VOLUME XX: Prisons
As we look at the fabric of a society, and the placement of the citizens within it, the influence of the place on the soul is evident. Consider the individuals who carry the burden of society’s underbelly, assigned to toil in the confines of immorality, they are often society’s lower-class. The very air they breathe, the same air as those who are involuntarily incarcerated, is tainted with vice and degradation. It is within these dens of iniquity that all men are tested and found wanting. We task others with overseeing those who have transgressed society’s order, and it is their shoulders that serve as the weighty mantle. Each day we bear witness to the consequences of human frailty and folly, immersed in an environment where virtue is a rare commodity. Constant exposure to depravity will erode any man’s moral resolve and forever reverberate within the confines of their conscience. Erosion leaves marks. Few can be unscathed when immersed in an environment where the darkest recesses of human nature are exposed. We are designers in the pursuit of justice. We must never lose sight of the toll that place can take upon all that inhabit it.
We can be the light that penetrates the dark. We need not believe in perfection, we need only to believe in redemption. If place can influence the soul, there is hope.
We have hope. We are Studio Collective.
